Come Visit the Kelljur

001 Shipped Gold Standard by SaandStoorm

Kell is a small island over fifty miles off the coast of Norway. It's a rather unspectacular island, known mostly for dangerous predators and freezing solid in the winter. The handful of local tribes that inhabit it are tough and resourceful, renowned for their survival skills, especially when the weather gets harsh and unforgiving. It's home to the origins of Nordic folklore, and some of the oldest traditions still survive there today.

It is also home to the Kelljür.

Legend has it that each of these hardy equines are blessed by Nordic gods. In return for their loyalty, the gods reward the horses with powers that rival their own. At the highest levels, they are even given animal companions and jewels. They are hardy enough to survive the roughest terrain, intelligent enough to outwit predators and humans who hunt them, and agile enough to navigate rocks and snow.

Kelljürs are extremely intelligent, and will not deal with rough handling. They are easily trained and can master any discipline - be it English, Western, driving, or in-hand - quickly, provided they find it something they want to do. If not, they will be stubborn. They are strong, and there's no way to force them to do something they don't want to do.

A Kelljür can be "blessed" by a multitude of Norse gods: Odin, Thor, Loki, Freya, Freyr, Njoror, Skaoi, Eir, Hel, and even the Great Tree Ygdrassil.
These gifts include jewels, companions, special powers, and even immortality.

Come get a Kelljur of your own!

Hi there! My name is Stormy.
I currently run the stable Windswept-Acres and the breed Kelljur, while running Blue-Sky-Cattery and Equivance, and co-managing FallenOakStables. I specialize in equine art.
My secondary account is ShadowbrookeStables, where I run a small natural stable entirely separate from Windswept.

A Little About Me:
:bulletpurple: I'm a college student from Texas, USA, studying Early Childhood Education, hoping to be an elementary teacher. I also do graphic design/illustration professionally.
:bulletwhite: I've been drawing horses since I was very little. The first horse character I ever created, Starfire Glory, is still in my stable today.
:bulletpurple: I use Photoshop CS6 and a Wacom Intuos Pen & Touch tablet to create my works. On occasion, I'll do something by hand, but it's rare now.
:bulletwhite: I've been going strong with my boyfriend, Aaron, for over two years now. Our anniversary is October 21st :date:
:bulletpurple: I like to help people out. If you need help with something, I'll do my best to help you. Don't be afraid to approach me.
:bulletwhite: I'm an avid reader and writer as well. I hope to write a novel someday, and I'm trying to get one going!
:bulletpurple: My favorite color is purple (if you couldn't tell!) though I also like red and sky blue.
:bulletwhite: In addition to art, I love cross stitching, playing bass guitar, video games (my favorite being the Tomb Raider series), and listening to music (Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the Disco, and twenty one pilots).

Horse Life Matrix

What is the Matrix?
Arrow Bullet (Purple) - F2U! by Drache-Lehre The Matrix is a new take on randomizing your horse's life. In essence, your horse starts out with Health Points. At each time interval, you roll for events. These events will either give (immunizations and medication), cost (illnesses and injuries), or maintain (passive events) health points. It does not rely purely on age, meaning your horse's aging can occur entirely separate from the Matrix.

Why is it called a matrix?
Arrow Bullet (Purple) - F2U! by Drache-Lehre In mathematics, a matrix is a set of numbers laid out in table form. Because this Horse Life Matrix is based on a set of numbers that could, as one way of running it, be set up in a table, I called it a matrix.
Arrow Bullet (Purple) - F2U! by Drache-Lehre Also it sounds cool.

Rules:
Arrow Bullet (Purple) - F2U! by Drache-Lehre The Matrix should be rolled at given time intervals (monthly, bimonthly, quarterly, etc).
Arrow Bullet (Purple) - F2U! by Drache-Lehre Horses can be made immune to certain things (death or serious injury); this can be changed at any time.
Arrow Bullet (Purple) - F2U! by Drache-Lehre The end result of this list should be a comprehensive list of horses and their events for that time interval.
Arrow Bullet (Purple) - F2U! by Drache-Lehre Not happy with a result? You can reroll it (especially basic health stats).

How To Use the Matrix:
Arrow Bullet (Purple) - F2U! by Drache-Lehre One way of running the Matrix (the way I use it for a full stable) is to set everything up in a table of numbers so that you don't have to reset the generator for each value, but because that gets complicated to explain, I will be showing you how to use it for one horse. At the very end I'll explain how to set up the actual matrix.
Arrow Bullet (Purple) - F2U! by Drache-Lehre Basically just create a new document for your horse's time interval and follow the steps.

Step One: Establishing Health Points
Arrow Bullet (Purple) - F2U! by Drache-Lehre I would recommend making either a large document with all your horses' basic health stats or putting it individually on their references.
Arrow Bullet (Purple) - F2U! by Drache-Lehre General Health; this is how healthy your horse is on average and will help determine your horse's life for the rest of the Matrix. Essentially, when your horse is born/created/put into the Matrix, they start out with a certain number of "Health Points". The maximum number of points is 100, and the minimum is 1. Set the generator as 1-100 and randomize. You could also just start your horse at 100 points and skip rolling this one.
Arrow Bullet (Rainbow) - F2U! by Drache-Lehre Tip! How I do my Matrix: I list both the specific health points (as, for example, 65/100 HP) and proportions of bullets (with 100 points being Bullet; RedBullet; RedBullet; YellowBullet; YellowBullet; YellowBullet; GreenBullet; GreenBullet; GreenBullet; GreenBullet; Green, and every 10 points off being taken from the right, so a number between 60/100 and 69/100 would end up as Bullet; RedBullet; RedBullet; YellowBullet; YellowBullet; YellowBullet; GreenBullet; BlackBullet; BlackBullet; BlackBullet; Black)

Step 2: The Big Roll
Arrow Bullet (Purple) - F2U! by Drache-Lehre Now the fun part! Each time interval, you will roll a number 1-100 for each horse. This determines what happens to them for that month.
1-25
Nothing! Your horse is fine, and nothing eventful happened this time. (+/- 0 HP)
26-50
Minor injury or illness! Roll the Minor Ailment List
51-75
Health Boost! Roll the Health Boost List
76-100
Major injury or illness! Roll the Major Ailment List
Arrow Bullet (Rainbow) - F2U! by Drache-Lehre Important!: For horses whose health points are below 20 (in the red: Bullet; RedBullet; Red), their health is considered critical and they will no longer have any health boosts. The list becomes modded: 26-75 will now be Minor Ailment.
Arrow Bullet (Purple) - F2U! by Drache-Lehre Note: if, for whatever reason, you find that you are rolling a certain category far too often, feel free to adjust the numbers for yourself.

Step 3: The Little Rolls
Arrow Bullet (Purple) - F2U! by Drache-Lehre Three of the four categories require additional rolls in order to determine the number of health points your horse loses (or gains). Here is a convenient gathering of all the little lists you may need to roll.

Step 4: Tracking Your Health Points
Arrow Bullet (Purple) - F2U! by Drache-Lehre The easiest way to track your horse's HP is on their reference or in a document. List their beginning health points and, each interval, the event that occurred and the change in HP. End with the current number of health points.
For example, on your horse's reference you could do...

Health: Bullet; RedBullet; RedBullet; YellowBullet; YellowBullet; YellowBullet; GreenBullet; GreenBullet; GreenBullet; GreenBullet; Green
Current Health Points:
 100/100
Events:
     Pixel: Purple Star by apparate
1YO: [Event 1] [Event 2] [Event 3]
Pixel: Purple Star by apparate 2YO: [Event 1] [Event 2] [Event 3]

and so on.

Step 5: The Valley of the Shadow of Death
Arrow Bullet (Purple) - F2U! by Drache-Lehre As your horse goes on through its merry little life, it will lose health points more than it will gain them. The Matrix is designed to work this way in order to more accurately represent life while still allowing for a long life, depending on the time interval you roll on. When your horse loses all its health points, it reaches the end of its life.
Arrow Bullet (Purple) - F2U! by Drache-Lehre Alternatively, this could be not death, but retirement for a career horse.
Arrow Bullet (Purple) - F2U! by Drache-Lehre Though for many artists this is a deeply personal choice, you may randomize the cause if you'd like (if the final event that brings your horse's HP to zero isn't satisfactory for your pixel equine loved one's life). This list is final, and all events on it are purely optional and will remove any remaining health points.

Putting it All Together: The Mathematical Matrix
Arrow Bullet (Purple) - F2U! by Drache-Lehre Wait! Before you get scared off by the word "mathematical", remember the definition of matrix from the beginning: a set of numbers laid out in table form. You don't have to perform any calculations or plug anything into a calculator whatsoever. All you need is a nice little table, such as a spreadsheet (or pencil and paper, if you prefer to do it that way).
Arrow Bullet (Purple) - F2U! by Drache-Lehre Here's how I set up my table (essentially):
Horse Name | Big Roll 1-100 | Result Roll
Horse Name | Big Roll 1-100 | Result Roll
Horse Name | Big Roll 1-100 | Result Roll
Arrow Bullet (Purple) - F2U! by Drache-Lehre I first list out all the horses' names, then do the 1-100 roll. I then roll list by list for any horse who needs it. This way, the randomizer is set and doesn't need to be changed each and every time (which saves a ton of time, especially if you have a lot of horses!).

That's the Matrix!
